WAITING CHILD PROGRAM
The China Center of Children’s Welfare and Adoption (CCCWA) currently oversees all adoptions within The People’s Republic of China. Both boys and girls are eligible for adoption through this long-standing program, and are typically between the ages of 9 months and 13 years old. Children may have minor to severe special needs, including those that may require surgeries or ongoing medical care. Families in China’s Waiting Child program are matched through the CCCWA’s Shared List, CCCWA’s Individual List provided to LHAA by their adoption social worker, and through direct partnerships with Chinese orphanages. After a referral and travel approval are granted by the CCCWA, families are approved through USCIS, and then will make one trip to China to finalize their adoption. The in-country travel process lasts an average of two weeks, while the adoption is finalized.
